Clan MacDuff
13th–14th Centuries
The land where Fernie Castle stands belonged to Clan MacDuff as early as the 13th century, and the estate was first documented on parchment in 1353.
In November 1384, the Scottish Parliament officially recognized Clan MacDuff as the first officially acknowledged clan. This centuries-long privilege granted its chieftain a unique role in royal succession, stemming from royal lineage traced back to King Dub of Scotland (reigned 962–966 AD).
The clan held the hereditary right to lead the vanguard of Scotland’s army and offered sanctuary to its clansmen. Any member charged with murder could gain absolution by paying a fine if they reached the MacDuff Cross near Abernethy.
The clan motto is Deus Juvat, meaning “God assists”. Its coat of arms features a red lion on a golden field, symbols of sovereignty and bravery.
